Zack Oakley is heavily involved in the San Diego scene with his band Joy and other collaborations such as Volcano. Those in the know will be aware of his serious ability with a guitar. His solo album also proves that he's got the songs to back up the instrumental chops, as this LP runs through a gamut of 70's hard rock & blues, psych-leaning melodies and acid-drenched choruses, like Syd Barrett jamming with Hendrix. 'Badlands' is a diverse record that barely wastes a minute of its run time.
Favorite track: Badlands.
wow, just wow! this is the type of 70s 'stoner' rock i love. not tedious post-metal, just great catchy tunes and a proggy, hippie, long-haired vibe. hell yes. in the spirit of, say, Spirit (pun intended), Hendrix, Captain Beyond, Mahogany Rush, James Gang, early Santana, Robin Trower, a bit of good ole Foghat, some Johnny Winter.. Dirk Steffens, anyone?- need i say more??... YOU NEED IT.
I have no idea exactly what genre this falls into but it does it damn well. Stray was my favourite but the Magnetic Ridge sounded almost like All Them Witches so that was close second. I also love the little wild west style guitar parts throughout the album it's really atmospheric. Charlie Hodgson
ever since this album first came out on my birthday I have been obsessed with it! it's like the greatest present anyone could have given me. unsurpassed talent, I have trouble finding a sound to match this perfection! Tom Templars way with singing could make even the most devoted evangelical break down into blasphemous grooves! BlackFrost666
